Bikes, luggage, e-scooters and dogs on Warsaw public transport: what is free and where they go

Correct as of , checked

  • In buses and trams the bike space is opposite the 2nd door from the driver; in the metro only at the first and last doors.
  • Luggage and animals need no extra ticket: the fee table lists them at 0 PLN.
  • An e-scooter is carried like luggage; riding it in public transport is not allowed.
  • A bike must give way: you have to free the space for a wheelchair user or a parent with a pram.

In buses and trams the bike space is opposite the second door from the driver, and in the metro only at the first and last doors of the train.

Where to put your bike

Every metro carriage, SKM train, tram and bus has a marked space for wheelchairs, prams, luggage and bikes. The position depends on the vehicle:

VehicleWhere the bike goes
Busopposite the 2nd door, counting from the driver's cab
Tramopposite the 2nd door, counting from the driver's cab
Metroonly at the first and the last doors of the train
SKM and KM trainsdoors marked with a bike pictogram

Rules from the city's official guidance:

  • Check that there is free space before you get on.
  • Your bike must not get in other passengers' way, dirty the vehicle or damage it.
  • If it might be a nuisance, get off and wait for the next one.
  • You must free the space on request for a person in a wheelchair or with a pram.
  • Follow the instructions of the driver, traffic supervisors and ticket inspectors.

Luggage and airport trips

Suitcases ride free, which makes public transport a cheap way to and from the airport. Stand in the space for prams and luggage if there is one, keep the doors and aisle clear, and hold your bag when the vehicle moves. At rush hour a large suitcase takes up space other passengers need, so travel outside the peaks if you can.

For airport routes, see Chopin Airport to the city centre and Modlin Airport to Warsaw.

E-scooters

An e-scooter is treated like luggage on public transport: it travels free, but you may not ride it on board. Once you are off, the city's e-scooter rules apply. They are banned in the Old Town, Łazienki Królewskie (Royal Łazienki Park), Ogród Krasińskich (Krasiński Garden), Park Sowińskiego and Lasek na Kole, and since 3 March 2026 children under 13 may not ride them on public roads.

Dogs and other pets

Animals travel without a ticket. The city's general rules for pet owners say that anyone out and about with an animal must take whatever precautions are needed to keep people and animals safe and to preserve public order. In public places dogs should be on a lead; aggressive or potentially dangerous animals should also wear a muzzle and be in the charge of someone who can handle them.

The detailed conditions for animals in ZTM vehicles are set out in the carriage regulations (Regulamin przewozu). Read them before you travel with a pet. On regional KM trains, Koleje Mazowieckie's own rules apply.

Quick checklist

  1. Buy and validate your own ticket; see Warsaw tickets.
  2. With a bike, use the right door: second door in buses and trams, first or last door in the metro.
  3. Wait for a less crowded vehicle if there is no space.
  4. Give way to wheelchairs and prams.
  5. Keep your dog close and safe for others.
